Volleyball: Sonoraville knocks off No. 7 Dalton
By Trace Vaughn
The Sonoraville High School volleyball team played spoiler on senior night for #7 ranked AAA Dalton. 6’2” middle blocker Carrie Cheeks had a big night at the net with 6 kills and 3 blocks. “Cheeks was a game changer tonight,” said Phoenix Coach Nathan Smith. “She went head-to-head with a good hitter (Dalton’s Natali Rendon) and won the battle.”
The Phoenix took the first set in impressive fashion (25-16), and were in command for much of the second set before the Catamounts made a late surge that fell just short. The Phoenix finished things off with a 25-23 victory. “For nearly 40 points, we played some of the best ball we’ve played all season,” added Smith. “We seem to be peaking at the right time.”
Joining Cheeks with outstanding efforts were Kristi Vaughn with 7 kills, 6 assists, five digs, and 6-for-6 serving; Kailey Vaughn with 4 kills, 9 assists, 7 digs, and 5 aces on 17-of-17 serving; Jennilee Gentry with 3 kills and 7-of-7 serving; and Nikki Eitutis with 9 digs.
The Phoenix improve their season record to 28-6, and play next at North Paulding, where they will seek to avenge one of their earlier losses. Cartersville and Haralson County will also be on the slate for the Thursday quad-match.
