Football: South Georgia teams dominate top of 5A poll

Three teams from south Georgia, including No. 1 Lowndes, are among the top four teams in Class AAAAA in the first coaches football poll for the 2011 season. The Vikings have started quickly, with easy wins over South Gwinnett and Pebblebrook. Behind Lowndes, Camden County is second followed by Grayson at No. 3 and Colquitt County at No. 4.

In AAAA, state semifinalist Tucker is ranked No. 1 after an 18-7 win over Region 6-AAAA rival Southwest DeKalb. Northside Warner Robins and Statesboro are second and third, respectively, while defending champion Chattahoochee is fifth.

Sandy Creek, which has won 30 games in a row and two straight state titles, is No. 1 in Class AAA while Burke County is No. 2 and St. Pius is No. 3.

Buford, with four straight state championships and a 58-2 record during that span, is No. 1 in Class AA after a 2-0 start. Carver Columbus is ranked second and Greater Atlanta Christian is third.

Class A defending state champion Clinch County is No. 1 after surviving a close call against Pierce County 14-13 in its season opener. Lincoln County is off to a 2-0 start and is ranked No. 2 while Wilcox County is No. 3.
