Boys basketball: 4 champs top preseason polls

Four of the five state champions from last season are ranked No. 1 this week in the inaugural boys basketball coaches poll for the 2010-11 season.

Whitefield Academy, the state runner up in Class A last season, is the only No. 1 team that is not a defending champion. the Wolfpack lost to No. 2 ranked Wesleyan last season in the state championship game.  Three teams each from Region 5 (Wesleyan, Providence Christian and Pace Academy) and Region 2 (Wilcox County, Lanier County and Turner county) fill up the top 10.

Defending Class AAAAA Milton is considered the top team in any classification, and returns at No. 1. The Eagles are loaded with college talent as several already have committed to top programs including Shannon Scott (Ohio State), Julian Royal (Georgia Tech), Dai-Jon Parker (Vanderbilt) and Jordan Loyd (Furman). Norcross, which lost in the quarterfinals last season, is ranked No. 2 and 2010 state runner-up Westlake is No. 4.

Miller Grove returns at No. 1 in AAAA after winning the state title last season. Rockdale County, which lost in the second round last season, is No. 2 and Tucker is third. Mays, last year’s state runner-up, is fourth. It should be noted that Rockdale is the only member of the top four not in Region 6-AAAA.

Defending Class AAA champion Columbia is back at No. 1 with LaGrange No. 2. the Eagles beat LaGrange 54-46 lat year for the title.

Greater Atlanta Christian and Thomasville are No. 1 and No. 2 respectively, in Class AA. GAC beat Thomasville 77-65 last season in the state championship game.
