Football: Most pivotal matchups by region – A
Region 1: Miller County at Seminole County, Oct. 29. the top two teams in the region last season have a long history. Seminole leads the series 29-24-3, but lost last season 19-6 in a game that decided the top seed in the region. Seminole has won three of the past five games in the series.
Region 2: Charlton County at Clinch County, Nov. 5. The battle in the swamp now has more meaning as Charlton drops down from AA and is sharing a region with Clinch. Charlton leads the series 25-22-1 and has won the past seven in a row.
Region 3: ECI at Johnson County, Sept. 24. This game has decided the subregion’s top seed two straight years and is likely to play that role again. ECI, which won a Class A state title in 2007, has won four in a row in the series including 32-31 last season.
Region 4: Greenville at Chattahoochee County, Sept. 10. The top two teams in the region over the past two seasons are 2-2 since Chattahoochee County opened four years ago. Both teams should compete for the regular season region title again this season.
Region 5: Holy Innocents’ at Wesleyan, Sept. 17. Two region champions find themselves in the same subregion in 2010. Wesleyan leads the series 3-2 since Holy Innocents’ opened four years ago and neither team has won two in a row. Defense has been the deciding factor in all five games.
Region 6: Bowdon at Bremen, Oct. 29. This is one of the longest running fueds in the state, with Bowdon leading the series 39-22. The Red Devils won 30-10 last year to break a three-game losing streak. This one usually has playoff implications as has been the case the past two seasons.
Region 7: Washington-Wilkes at Lincoln County, Oct. 15. throw out the records when these two teams in neighboring counties meet. Lincoln, which has won at least 11 games for seven straight seasons, has had the upper hand for a while but four of the past five games have been decided by a touchdown or less.
Region 8: Commerce at Athens Academy, Oct. 15. With perennial power Wesleyan in another region, this is the game that could decide the region’s top seed heading into the playoffs. Commerce broke a three-game losing streak against the Academy last season. the previous four games were each decided by eight points or less.
