Football: Class AA 2nd round playoff previews
Class AA
North Oconee (8-3) at Calhoun (11-0): The combination of quarterback Nash Nance and receiver Da’Rick Rogers (committed to Georgia) has paced the Yellow Jackets to an average of 40 points per game. Hal Lamb has led the Jackets to nine straight double-digit wins. North Oconee rebounded last week with a 34-14 win over Lamar County after three straight losses to end the regular season.
Swainsboro (10-1) at Fitzgerald (11-0): The series is tied 1-1, but the two teams have not met since 2000. Defense has carried the Tigers, who have four shutouts and have held eight opponents to seven points or less. Fitzgerald has posted four shutouts and are led on offense by quarterback Kaleb Nobles.
Westminster (8-3) at Callaway (9-2): Both teams had easy outings in the first round last week, with Callaway winning by 40 over Riverside Military and Westminster getting a 28-6 win over Armuchee. The Cavaliers have won nine in a row after losing their first two games of the season
Thomasville (8-3) at Jefferson County (11-0) The Bulldogs’ defense, which has posted four shutouts, will be tested by a Warriors offense that has averaged about 36 points per game. Dual-threat quarterback Barry Bostic has accounted for about 2,000 yards total offense and 27 touchdowns.
East Jackson (10-1) at Lovett (10-1): The Eagles, a third-year program under Frank Caputo, won only four games total over the first two seasons. The Lions, which beat defending state champ Buford earlier in the season, roll into the game on a five-game winning streak.
Cook (6-5) at Appling County (10-1): Cook leads the series 8-6-1 and beat the Pirates 25-10 in the second round of the playoffs last season. The Pirates, on a six-game winning streak, have won four games by seven points or less. Cook advanced to the state semifinals two years ago.
Brooks County (9-2) at Charlton County (10-0-1): The Indians lead the series 6-3 and have beaten Brooks four straight times. The Indians are nearly unbeatable in The Swamp, having lost there only thee times since 2003. Brooks’ trip to the state semifinals last season marked their first double-digit win season since 1998.
Buford (10-1) at Jefferson (11-0): Both teams have solid offenses with strong running games. Buford has won two state titles in a row while the Dragons have back-to-back double digit wins seasons for the first time in school history.
