Football: Class AAA 2nd round playoff previews

Class AAA
Washington County (10-1) at Peach County (11-0): Peach County leads 9-0-2 in a series that dates back to 1972. The two teams have met three times since 2004, including a 43-29 win by Peach in the Class AAA semifinals at the Georgia Dome in 2006. This will be only the second postseason meeting in the series.

Dunwoody (7-4) at Gainesville (11-0): Quarterback Blake Sims and receiver Tai-ler Jones, who has committed to Notre Dame, lead one of the most explosive offenses in the state for Gainesville. The Red Elephants are averaging 48 points per game. Dunwoody get the job done on the ground averaging about 250 yards rushing per game.

Cairo (8-3) at Baldwin (9-2): Both teams are on a roll after slow starts. The Braves have won seven in a row, all by at least two touchdowns. Cairo, the defending state champions, has won five in a row and eight of its last nine. The Syrupmakers, who won with offense last season are doing it with defense in 2009. They have allowed only 24 pints over the past five games.

North Hall (9-2) at St. Pius (11-0): The Golden Lions are feeding off their first undefeated regular season in about 40 years. The Golden Lions have three shutouts and have held eight opponents to a touchdown or less. The Trojans have won eight I a row after a 1-2 start.

Liberty County (8-3) at Jackson (11-0): This is Jackson’s fifth trip to the second round in seven years. Neiron Ball, a Florida commit, leads a defense that has held seven opponents to a touchdown or less. Liberty is coming off an upset of LaGrange. The 16-13 win was the Panthers’ sixth game decided by three points or less, including three overtime games. The Panthers are 4-2 in those games.

Grady (10-1) at Flowery Branch (8-3): Quarterback Connor Shaw, a South Carolina commit, brother of Georgia Tech safety and former Falcons quarterback Jaybo Shaw, makes the offense roll. The Falcons averaged about 40 points per game through the first nine contests, but have scored a total of 34 pints in the past two games. The two teams met for the first time in 2006 in the second round, with the Falcons winning 32-29.

Woodward Academy (8-3) at Carver Columbus (10-1): The Tigers are 48-6 in the past four years, wit including a state championship in 2007. The Tigers will need to stop the Ear Eagles running game, led by Duke commit Juwan Thompson.

Carrollton (10-1) at Eastside (11-0): The Eagles are on an eight-game winning streak after starting the season 1-2. The Eagles are in the postseason for the fourth time in the 14-year history of the program. Carrollton, meanwhile, have mad the postseason 2 straight seasons.  Rayvan Teague is 81-17 in eight seasons in Carrollton.
