Pope’s Victory Over Milton Eagles May Pull Them Into Playoffs
By: Jessica Hale
Pope fans experienced a delightful surprise Friday night when their 45-14 victory over Milton High School put the greyhounds in the running for the playoffs. Now only their last rival of the season, the Walton Raiders, stand in their way for a spot in the playoff brackets.
The Greyhounds began the 2009 season in high hopes as Pope dominated in their first game over Kennesaw Mountain with a score of 35-7. However, the following games proved disappointing for the hounds, and they lost four consecutive close matches of 32-31 to Lassiter, 30-27 to Roswell, 35-15 to Centennial, and 21-20 to Kell.
Nevertheless, Pope got its act together in October, and ever since then, the greyhounds have dominated the field, triumphing over Campbell 26-14, Wheeler 24-0, and then Alpharetta 14-7.
With their recent win over Milton, Pope has now set their season record at 5-4, placing them 5th in the region. With the top four teams advancing to the playoffs, this Friday’s game against Walton is crucial if Pope wants to make it to the finals.
Highlights of the October 30th game include a 157 yard – 2 touchdown run in just 12 carries by senior captain and running back Marcorous Garrett, an additional 26 yard touchdown by him, an 80 yard touchdown by wide receiver junior Garrett Brown, and two touchdowns by the team’s very own quarterback, sophomore Holland Frost.
Currently, Walton ranks third in the 6-AAAAA region with 6 wins and 3 losses shortly after suffering a 28-21 defeat against Roswell last week. If Pope comes out victorious this Friday night, both school’s season records will even out to 6-4, giving the greyhounds an opportunity to vie for the playoffs.
Other exciting matches this week in the 6AAAAA division: top ranked teams Lassiter and Roswell, both holding perfect 8-0 records, will face each other and determine the number one contender for the region championships; Kell High School, ranked fourth in the region with a 5-4 record like Pope, will face recently defeated Milton (7th in region); Centennial (6th in region) with 4 wins and 5 losses will challenge Wheeler High school, with a 0-8 record; and Campbell, ranked 9th with 1 win and 7 losses, will play Alpharetta (8th in region), who also has a 1-7 record.
