Panthers shutout Tigers to clinch Region 6-AAAA title

Steven Coates passed for 130 yard and three touchdowns in three quarters to lead the No. 3 ranked Southwest DeKalb Panthers to a 27-0 victory over the No. 7 ranked Tucker Tigers to clinch the Region 6-AAAA title.

Coates connected with Margues Dixon (17 yards), William Goodwin (20 yards) and Jonathan Mincy (13 yards) on touchdown passes and ran for one of his own as he hit on eight of 12 passes.

The Panther (8-1, 8-0) defense smothered the Tigers (7-2, 6-2) with interceptions by Dixon and Naim Wakeel in the first half that led to a 14-0 halftime lead as well as holding the Tigers to 42 yards of offense through three quarters.

Southwest DeKalb will host a first round Class AAAA state playoff game in two weeks. Tucker, the defending state champion, will travel in the first round.

The Chamblee Bulldogs (5-4, 4-4) jumped back into the Region 6-AAAA playoff picture with a 14-0 shutout of the Stone Mountain Pirates (6-3, 5-3).

Kyle Kimbral recovered a fumble at the Stone Mountain eight-yard line and three plays later  quarterback Ronald Herndon scored from one-yard out to give Chamblee all the points it would need with 7:32 to play in the first quarter. The Bulldogs added a Kris Parks 12-yard touchdown in the third quarter to seal the win.

The Bulldogs need a win next week against Miller Grove to have a chance to make the playoffs, while a Stone Mountain win against Southwest DeKalb would assure them the playoff spot.

Dunwoody (6-3, 5-1) clinched the Region 5-AAA, Sub-Region A title with its 28-0 win over Druid Hills on Friday night and assured the Wildcats of a first round host role in the Class AAA playoffs. They will face St. Pius for the 5-AAA title on Friday night.

Towers (6-3, 5-1) shut out Clarkston (1-8, 0-6) 47-0 to earn a host role in the Region 5-AAA play-in game against Carver. The winner of the play-in game advances to the Class AAA playoffs.
